News ToGo reports that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja had yesterday quashed the terrorism charges against the IPOB Leader. That judgment led to jubilation in Kanu’s camp and among his supporters in various part of the country especially the South East.
However, there are feelers that the judgment may affect the chances of Obi, the Labour Party, LP presidential candidate’s chance of winning the 2023 election. There is divergent opinion on the issue. Some hold the view that the judgment can negatively affect Obi’s chance of winning the 2023 presidential election, while others believe it would boost the chance.
Speaking on this issue, a Public Affairs Analyst, Mr Kenneth Onuh, stated that Kanu’s release would affect Peter Obi’s presidential bid negatively. According to him while speaking to Daily Post, Igbos would now continue their agitation for a possible break up from Nigeria. He further said that they may no longer be interested in the Igbo presidency or any form of election.
He said, “The attention of the whole Ndigbo has been shifted from Peter Obi. They are now following their master, Kanu, so Peter Obi and other presidential candidates who were relying on the South-East may have to look for alternatives. Before he was detained, he clearly told everyone that election would not hold in Igbo land. He is back, and agitation continues. This is going to affect Peter Obi more than other candidates”.
Yet, there are those who believe that Kanu’s release would increase Obi’s chances of winning the presidential election. One of them is the President-General of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, Mr Goodluck Ibem. He argued that Kanu’s release would favour the Labour Party candidate in the contest. He said, “We are happy that he has been released. The release of Mazi cannot affect Peter Obi negativity, it will rather adds colour to what is already happening”.
Others who hold similar view as Ibem are Obi’s supporters across the country and members of LP who are seriously mobilizing for him to win. One of them based in Abuja said this. His name is IK, a member of LP. He insisted that Kanu’s release would boost Obi’s chances of winning. It is possible that Kanu’s release may or may not affect Obi’s chances. The odds depend on what OBIdients and Nigerians decide to do at the poll.
Former Pope Benedict XVI has died.
News ToGo learned that the former Pope died at his Vatican residence at the age of 95 years. His demise came almost a decade after he resigned from the papal seat because of ailing health.
He led the Catholic Church for less than eight years until, in 2013, he became the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.
Benedict spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the walls of the Vatican.
His successor, Pope Francis, said he had visited him there frequently.
Although the former Pontiff had been ill for some time, the Holy See said there had been an aggravation in his condition because of advancing age.
On Wednesday, Pope Francis appealed to his final audience of the year at the Vatican to “pray a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict”, whom he said was very ill.
Born Joseph Ratzinger in Germany, Benedict was 78 when in 2005 he became one of the oldest Popes ever elected.

News ToGo learned that some desperate politicians have been plotting ways to manipulate the 2023 elections. Part of the plan is to work against the electoral umpire with a view to having their way.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has now confirmed that politicians are trying hard to hack into its Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and servers.
However, INEC busted the plot and is taking proactive measures to frustrate those behind it. The commission has also restated its determination to make the 2023 general elections free and fair. It further said that it is working round the clock to ensure that the integrity of its server is maintained during and after the 2023 elections.
INEC’s Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, Achumie Chuka Rex, stated this recently at a two-day workshop for civil society organizations on Voter Education, organized by Transition Monitoring Group (TMG).
“There is no room to hack into INEC sever,” Chuka said. “Politicians are doing everything possible to get into INEC server or even to manufacture BVAS but unfortunately for them, INEC is three steps ahead of their plots.”
Furthermore, dispelling fears of a network problem that would make BVAS work effectively in rural areas, the INEC official said that BVAS was built on a dual basis – “online and offline”.
Recall that many INEC offices have been burnt by hoodlums suspected to be working for some desperate politicians. This is also said to be another plot by those seeking to waken INEC to have their way during the 2023 elections.
