BREAKING: Don’t Threaten Me – Wike Fumes Over Workers’ Action

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has fired a warning at some workers.
News ToGo reports that Wike reprimanded resident doctors in Abuja against threatening to embark on industrial action. He stated that he would not pay doctors who embark on strike while he’s a minister, adding that he’s ready to contend with them in court.
Addressing resident doctors, Wike said he would make more money when they embark on industrial action.
“Make your recommendations, and we will see the ones we can do and those we can’t do. Don’t threaten me with a strike because I don’t like it. When you go on strike, I save money; even if you come back, I won’t pay; we will determine it in court.
“It’s not about promises but the reality on ground, I don’t believe in theory,” Wike said.
Lately, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has intermittently engaged in industrial actions, citing the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill their demands.
Among the doctors’ requests are the prompt disbursement of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), substantial progress on the “upward adjustment” of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), and settlement of all outstanding salary arrears dating back to 2015 for its members.
Additionally, the doctors are advocating for immediate substantial recruitment of clinical staff in hospitals and the removal of bureaucratic obstacles hindering the swift replacement of departing doctors and nurses within the system.
They are also urging the urgent reassessment of hazard allowances by all state governments, as well as private tertiary health institutions where any form of residency training takes place.

BREAKING: NLC Speaks On Agreement With FG To Calls Off Proposed Nationwide Strike

NLC has spoken on agreement with FG to call off its proposed nationwide strike.
News ToGo reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said it has no agreement with the Federal Government to call off the planned indefinite strike scheduled for October 3.
Mr. Benson Upah, the Head of Information and Public Affairs at the NLC disclosed this in a statement.
Upah spoke in response to a statement allegedly issued by Mr. Olajide Oshundun, the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Labour and Employment. He pointed out inconsistencies in the statement, including references to the proposed strike and the illegal occupation of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) secretariat.
The NLC emphasized that there was no agreement with the government to suspend the planned strike. It added that there was also no scheduled meeting with the government to discuss its suspension. The union clarified that this matter goes beyond the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
While acknowledging the role played by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr. Simon Lalong, in securing the release of NURTW executives from unlawful police detention, the NLC took exception to the ministry describing these executives as “factional leaders,” asserting that they were lawfully elected.
It urged the police and those responsible for the executives’ troubles to cease their conduct. NLC added that they should refrain from impunity, emphasizing the importance of upholding democracy and the rule of law.
