STRANGE: Reason Emerges On Why Borno Youths Drink Urine, Lizard Dungs
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has brought to light a disturbing trend among youths in Borno state who are turning to unconventional substances, including fermented human urine preserved for over 10 days, as alternatives to hard drugs.
News ToGo reports that Commander Iliyasu Mani, who heads the narcotics division for NDLEA in Borno state, expressed deep concern about the prevalent abuse of psychoactive substances among the youth in a statement issued in Maiduguri on Thursday, January 4.
Commander Mani said, “Let me state categorically here that these new psychoactive substances that are commonly abused today include Cannabis Sativa, skunk, Cough syrup with codeine; Ice, Tramadol, Rohypnol, Diazepam, Pentazocine, rubber solution, glue, gutter dirt, toilet fumes, lizard dung.”
Continuing to reveal the extent of these concerning practices, Mani added, “Others include Lipton soaked in gin, camel urine, Mentholated spirit in soft drinks; 10-day-old human Urine, and so on.”
Despite the commendable efforts of the NDLEA in fighting drug abuse, Commander Mani acknowledged the escalating challenge, particularly with the involvement of young teens and women in the abuse of new psychoactive substances. However, he conveyed optimism and highlighted the agency’s commitment to prevention, including the establishment of a remodeled counseling/rehab center within the Borno State Command premises.
He emphasized, “Despite all these, we must not lose our hope as the agency has strengthened its efforts towards prevention strategy through the establishment of remodeled counselling/rehab centre within the premises of Borno State Command.”
Commander Mani also mentioned the establishment of drop-in centers across tertiary institutions, serving as drug abuse research centers. Under his leadership, the NDLEA command in Borno state has seized 4.5 tonnes of illicit substances, leading to the arrest of 863 suspects. Among those arrested, 53 have been convicted, and 736 are currently undergoing counseling.
